Rules:

The Rules of the Monster Chest Card Game are easy to pick up and can be played by all ages!

Core Rules:

  • Both Players should have their own Deck, Heart Counter Dice, and one shared Challenge Coin.

  • Both Players start with their Heart Counter Dice set to 5 and draw 5 cards from their deck.

  • To start the game, assign one player as Head and the other as Tails. Flip the challenge coin and whichever side lands first starts.

  • Every turn, a player takes turns drawing one card from their deck, playing one card from their hand, and placing their played card in their discard pile.

  • Some Monsters can give hearts to the user, others take hearts from the opponent; every Monster has a different ability than the other, with nuances that make them unique. Learn what each one can do to strategize!

  • The game ends when a player is reduced to 0 hearts!

Extra Rules:

  • A Player can only have 10 hearts at a time.

  • When a Player is stunned, their next turn is skipped entirely.

  • A Player whose hearts are protected can still be affected by non-damaging card effects such as Stunning.

  • When a Player’s heart count is reduced to 0, they lose the game.

  • If one Player runs out of cards to draw, the game ends and whichever Player has the most hearts, wins.

  • The Monster Chest Card Game is made to be played best 2:3

Monster Types:

In the Monster Chest Card Game, both players have identical 36 card decks. Each card is a different monster, but they all fit in one of 3 type categories:

Artboard 1 copy 3.png

Spirits

Directly benefit the Player. Most Protect or Give Hearts.

Artboard 1 copy 4.png

Cryptids

Take Hearts from the Opponent and sometimes do an additional feature with either a coin flip or if a certain requirement is met.

Artboard 1 copy 5.png

Demons

Do a variety of features, but most are conditional. Very effective for all types of play, but they almost all come with a risk of doing nothing or even backfiring...

Spirits:

The Great Blue

Artist - Sean Hern

The Great Blue’s tears have incredible magical strength that overwhelms the emotions of whoever they touch, forcing them to confront any hidden grief.

The Slate Man

Artist: Nora Meek

If The Slate Man is approached by someone who has walked barefoot from where they were born to its cave, it will contact the spirits of the dead so they may see their passed loved ones.

The Flood Nymph

Artist: Joshua Roberts

Tied to the purity of the body of water they live in, anyone who threatens a Flood Nymph’s home experiences visions of a great flood.

The Child’s Guide

Artist: Guinevere Reilly

Every morning at 6 a.m. The Child’s Guide emerges from the Black Forest of Germany and walks local children to school.

The Boulder Lord

Artist: Mike Patten

Boulder Lords have had a bitter relationship with humans ever since the invention of dynamite, but they have a soft spot for children.

Bilen the Cavernous Knower

Artist: Barbara Kalustian

This ancient spirit lives in a cave at the base of Mt. Ararat in Turkey. Apparently, it can predict the events of anyone's death based on how they smell.

The Delicious Windsprint Rabbit

Artist: Sherry Muolo

Despite having the ability to short-range teleport when it blinks, there is only one Delicious Windsprint Rabbit left in the world thanks to overhunting.

Mechtatel the Dream Watcher

Artist: Chrissy Li Helmich

The Dreamwatcher manifests itself in the dreams of humans. Dream witnesses of the spirit have said that it appears just beyond their line of sight, remaining motionless and simply observing.

Weed Lord

Artist: Cathleen Margolin

Weed Lords regularly hold contests with other members of their kind, testing who can plant more of their unique weed than the rest.

The Children of the Mirror

Artist: Shea Vorbach

Though the many trapped spirits that make up The Children of the Mirror seem to be unhappy, they are quite good friends with each other.

The Australian Mint Fairy

Artist: Michelle Rincon

It is almost impossible to hold a long conversation with an Australian Mint Fairy because its breath is so powerfully minty, it brings people to tears.

Surfer King

Artist: Michael Brooks Chandler

Surfer King is the reanimated corpse of legendary 1950’s surfer Dante Royfelt and commonly appears before young surfers and challenges them to friendly competitions.

Cryptids:

American Garbage Troll

Artist: Yugo Limbo

American Garbage Trolls are normally friendly with humans. Many learn how to speak human languages so they can barter with the trash they collect.

The Irish Slinger

Artist: Scott Wilger

Irish Slingers love to eat rude children who refuse to do their chores. This is, of course, because rude children taste spicier than well-behaved ones.

Depth Hand

Artist: Rakugaki Otoko

Depth Hands hunt by grabbing on to fish and pulling them down into the depths. Because humans are rather big and tend to kick, Depth Hands will only grab their legs and pull them down a few feet before letting go.

The Armadillo Man

Artists: Eunice Song & Aaron Margolin

The Armadillo Man hunts by building a small ramp of dirt at the foot of a hill to roll down, launch itself in the air and snatch low flying birds.

Filipino Anxiety Lizard

Artist: Hero Paul See

Their gazes always seem distant, as if they know something they shouldn't or that there is a lot on their mind.

The Japanese Bath Rat

Artist: Genevive H

Older generations of bathhouse owners believe that Japanese Bath Rats are guardian Spirits and sometimes give them special bathing privileges. Younger generations think they are just big rats.

The Mimic Hawk

Artist: Kizzy Whitfield

Mimic Hawks used to be called Cow Hawks due to their tendency to morph their heads to match the shape of their chosen prey to confuse their soon-to-be food.

Vietnamese Phoenix Cat

Artist: Karolina Lubkova

Vietnamese Phoenix Cats utilize their magnesium-rich fur when hunting by rubbing their bodies against trees and stones to ignite their fur and stun prey.

The Stalking Sight

Artist: Genevive H

When someone sees a Stalking Sight, an eye just like theirs grows on its body. After being marked, anyone can close their eyes and watch themselves be hunted.

Greeter

Artist: Rakugaki Otoko

The product of an experiment conducted at McMurdo Station, Antarctica, Greeter's powers of creation are only limited to what they can think of.

Sock Imp

Artist: Katie Graziano

Sock Imps love eating children’s socks but are very picky and tend to only eat one out of a pair. Such a diet has resulted in many children being grounded for ‘losing’ their socks.

The Winged Horror / Seraphim

Artist: Andrew Douglas

Considered by many to be a Seraph angel, many believe that if a Winged Horror abducts you, it will take you to heaven...Technically, that may be true.

Demons:

The Pakistani Spice Demon

Artist: Chaz Bottoms

The Pakistani Spice Demon will make pacts with any chef who offers it creamy sweets. Most pacts result in a rival chef’s food always turning out unbearably spicy.

HeartThrob

Artist: DoopieDoodles

For every heart consumed by a HeartThrob, the more universally attractive their face appears. Inversely, a beating, pulsing heart appears somewhere on their body, leading most HeartThrobs to dress in layers.

Jebbadante the Show Demon

Artist: GiAnna Ligammari

Jebbadante has been described as a kind and generous night club owner by those who he has either paid off or threatened with eternal damnation.

Doorknob Fiend

Artist: Drew Applegate

When someone installs a Doorknob Fiend into a door, a curse flows through the door so that when it opens, it transports the user to any random place in

Red Mother

Artist: Josh Lissak

The mosquitos that serve the Red Mother infect her victims with a rare strand of West Nile Virus that causes hallucinations of this horrific demon.

The Portuguese Drinking Buddy

Artist: Robert Brimble

The Portuguese Drinking Buddy gets its prey drunk and then affixes its lips to those of its prey, sucking the stomach acid and alcohol mixture out.

Hydra Demon

Artist: Shan Murphy

This multi-headed demonic being radically splits people’s personalities in two until they physically tear themselves in half, producing two physically identical but mentally opposing copies.

Shock Goblin

Artist: Chelsea Holt

Most Shock Goblins make their nests in power plants where they dine on wires, batteries, and generators. They like AA Batteries best.

The Brimble

Artist: Emma Baker

The Brimble can shapeshift into anything it desires but insists on always being called “Brimble” in some way.

The Water Maiden

Artist: Vicky Leta

Parents all around Europe tell stories of The Water Maiden who stalks young girls and boys who refuse to do their morning chores.

The Sand Tease

Artist: Hannah Bosnian

Able to shape change into desert mirages, Sand Teases often travel in packs, morphing into intricate mirage displays of bazaars and even buffet tables to lure prey.

GazerArtist: Michael Brooks ChandlerSome believe that Gazers are manifest from the moon, which is why they are often found looking up at the celestial body for comfort.
